Dr. Sophianopoulos was awarded a Fulbright fellowship, during which she studied Radiochemistry in Paris, France. After her return she went on to earn her M.S. in Chemistry from Purdue University and then was awarded her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the same institution. She was a Postdoctoral fellow at the University of Illinois and has been a Senior Research Associate at Emory University, as well as lecturer and Mass Spectrometrist.
In the field she has worked extensively with the USEPA for over twenty years and has received several awards for her work. Through the years she has tutored for students at The Paideia School, Westminster, Carver High School, and the Emmaus House after-school program.
